The Opportunity
TECKpert is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to support our client, a state transportation agency in Tallahassee, FL, on the database layer feeding a multi-year financial management modernization program. This role supports critical database platforms across DB2 for z/OS, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server, ensuring the application and processing architectures, data dictionaries, and database schemas meet the agency's data standards.
The DBA will assist in the design, development, amendments, and optimization of the database schemas to meet system requirements. This includes performance monitoring and tuning, database maintenance, disaster recovery, and support for the agency's integrated application environment. Work is 5 days per week onsite at the agency's Tallahassee IT office with flexible hours between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM plus Saturday and on-call coverage as needed.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Perform daily operational and database administration activities across DB2 for z/OS, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server platforms
- Plan, design, implement, and support database structures for application and reporting workloads
- Conduct database performance monitoring and tuning using z/OS and cross-platform monitoring tools
- Develop and maintain database administration procedures, runbooks, and technical documentation
- Perform SQL code reviews and query optimization for application teams
- Assist with training and mentoring of other technical staff on DBA best practices
- Support disaster recovery planning, point-in-time recovery, and verification testing for infrastructure change management
- Perform DB2 for z/OS catalog maintenance, sub-system point-in-time recovery, and DB2 upgrades
- Coordinate with application, security, and infrastructure teams to maintain a stable and performant database environment
- Support other database or infrastructure activities as requested by the agency
Compensation and Term
This opportunity is for a full-time, contract position with possible extensions and pay commensurate with experience up to $65 per hour or $130,000 per year. The contract runs October 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, with possible renewal. The role is 40 hours per week onsite in Tallahassee, FL, with flexible hours between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM and possible Saturday or on-call coverage.
Qualifications you need
A successful candidate has the following experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum 15 years combined database administration experience across DB2 for z/OS, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle
- Advanced knowledge of DB2 for z/OS application integration, performance management, and database administration
- Advanced knowledge of upgrading DB2 for z/OS, DB2 catalog maintenance, and DB2 sub-system point-in-time recovery
- Advanced knowledge of JCL for building and troubleshooting mainframe job streams
- In-depth knowledge of the Z/OS integrated platform, ISPF, COBOL, CA GEN model management, and ASG Scheduler
- In-depth knowledge of DB2 for z/OS database monitoring tools and z/OS software monitoring tools
- In-depth knowledge of technical infrastructure implementation planning and coordination
- Solid working knowledge of Oracle 10g and above application integration, performance management, and database administration
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2008R2 / 2012 application integration, performance management, and database administration
- Solid working knowledge of z/OS started task creation and management, RACF, CICS, IOF, and Disaster Recovery
- Working knowledge of SSMS, SSRS, SSIS, Windows Servers, and Microsoft Azure
- Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work 5 days per week onsite in Tallahassee, FL, plus flexible hours and on-call coverage
- Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Ability to pass an FBI Level II background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with FDOT integrated database infrastructure
- Knowledge of FDOT Financial Management applications
- Knowledge of the FDOT integrated application environment
- Prior experience supporting the Florida PALM (Planning, Accounting, and Ledger Management) program or a comparable statewide accounting modernization initiative
- Working knowledge of z/OS EXITs and BJS
- IBM Certified Database Administrator (DB2 for z/OS), Oracle Certified Professional DBA, or Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
